St. Gallen Vocational and Further Education Center

Sound training for prospective design professionals

The School of Design St. Gallen (GBS) also relies on ColorEdge monitors from EIZO for the training and further education of its apprentices and students in the design disciplines and vocational training courses.

At the St. Gallen Vocational and Further Education Center, apprentices receive solid training in around 50 commercial and industrial professions. This also includes a wide range of further training opportunities, from courses to a federally recognized course at the Higher Technical College HF at the School of Design. The important training center in Eastern Switzerland thus underscores the high value placed on practical vocational training. A total of over 5000 apprentices are taught.

Quality monitors for high-quality training

Concentrated work is carried out in the classrooms. The pupils and students follow the lecturer attentively and immediately put what they have learnt into practice on the PC. Or they work independently on their own tasks in the classrooms, equipped with their own notebook and monitor and, depending on the course, other equipment.

EIZO ColorEdge monitors are used in the creative-artistic basic and advanced training programmes: In the professional 3-year in-service training programme to become a photographer or Dipl. Gestalter/in HF Visuelle Gestaltung or HF Interactive Media Design at the Höhere Fachschule für Künste, Gestaltung und Design as well as in the basic vocational training programmes to become a graphic designer and interactive media designer.

In addition, a large number of future professionals, such as apprentices training to become typographers, polygraphers, graphic designers, interactive media designers and print technologists at GBS, work with the ColorEdge monitors.

Versatile use

Apprentices and students are the future professionals of modern communication and design. In order to fulfil the associated requirements, they must learn their craft with all the associated aspects. This also includes working with the latest technologies.

For example, future polygraphers need to know how to calibrate monitor hardware. This is one of the requirements placed on the trained professionals. It is therefore essential that they learn and apply such processes during their training.

Budding graphic designers work with iMacs and need a large screen on which their work is clearly visible. Illustrations must be able to be displayed in high resolution, because even the smallest details must be realised coherently.

The programs that are used, such as InDesign, Photoshop, video editing with Cinema 4D and a wide range of other creative tools, require a monitor that offers true colour reproduction and good resolution.

These are all reasons why the use of professionally usable monitors is an important aspect of training. ColorEdge monitors from EIZO ensure that the processes and functions that are important for professional life can be learnt and used.

A good long-term investment

Daniel Brülisauer, what is your role at GBS?
GBS_-_Daniel_Bruelisauer.jpg

I am the Mac system administrator at GBS and am responsible, among other things, for installing hardware and software and carrying out technical clarifications on the devices we use. Together with other departments, I am also involved in the decision-making process regarding which devices are used at GBS.

Why did GBS choose monitors from EIZO?

During the re-evaluation, we were able to try out the EIZO monitors and test them under real conditions. For example, how accurate the color reproduction from the monitor to the print is. We then compared this output with monitors from other manufacturers. EIZO came out on top, with a wide range of settings. In addition, the latest software is always available: ColorEdge monitors are supplied with the ColorNavigator calibration software. The fact that this software is always up to date and can be downloaded very quickly for the new versions of Mac and Windows was another decisive argument for us.

And it was also one of the lecturers' wishes that ColorEdge monitors be used.

What special requirements need to be taken into account for a school?

In a school, monitors are in use all day long and are used intensively and by different people during the teaching day. That's why they need to be robust, adaptable to the respective user and able to withstand being moved back and forth.

We also want to be able to use the devices for a long time without the image quality deteriorating. After all, all students, including future students, should be able to work with the same good image quality.

How do EIZO monitors support you in your work?

The students work with laptops on which they carry out their tasks and save their work. Compatibility with these must work. We have no problems with this with EIZO monitors. Another plus point is EIZO's 5-year on-site warranty. We invest in quality because it pays off for us in the long term.

Your final conclusion?

We are very satisfied with the ColorEdge monitors from EIZO!

Medals for young professionals

The very good results they achieve at the World Vocational Championships are proof that the commitment to the apprentices and the great dedication of the teachers and instructors are worthwhile. At the last championships in Abu Dhabi in October 2017, Switzerland was the second-best nation (after China) with 11 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 3 bronze medals and numerous other top places. One apprentice at GBS won bronze in the printing technology category.
